Gov. office: Kish College set to receive $220K for greenhouse

MALTA – Kishwaukee College is set to receive $220,005 so it can update its decades-old greenhouse, according to Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office.

Rauner spokeswoman Elizabeth Tomev said the Governor’s Office of Management and Budget signed off on an Illinois Community College Board release of $11.3 million statewide for community college capital projects in the first round of funding to be released in this fiscal year, which includes funds requested by Kishwaukee College.

Bill Nicklas, special assistant to the president for Kishwaukee College, said the college was notified by the office of Illinois state Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Rochelle, about the college’s requested $220,005 being signed off on by Rauner. He said the funds would be used to make much-needed updates to the college’s large greenhouse.

Nicklas said the greenhouse is about 45 years old and seals on the structure’s glass panels are failing.

“We’re having trouble using this space for students that enroll in our programs, and we want it to be accessible,” Nicklas said.

Nicklas said the college has yet to receive written confirmation from the governor’s office about the college being guaranteed the state-disbursed funds.

“We’re waiting hopefully and are pleased that there was something in the works,” Nicklas said.

Tomev said the funds have been released and the paperwork was sent to the comptroller early yesterday afternoon, including the $220,005 requested by Kishwaukee College. She said the information also has been shared with the ICCB.

Along with the state-provided $220,005, Nicklas said, the college also will provide $164,570 to update the greenhouse for its horticulture programs. He said the college-provided funds would come from parts of its capital budget and foundation funds if needed.
